Alexander Pope (1688-1744), the most important English poet, translator, and satirist of the Enlightenment era, regarded satire as a “holy weapon, left for Truth’s defence, solitary terror of Folly, Vice, and Insolence.” It is a fascinating and unique method of expression in both written and spoken literature. Talented writers use it effectively to expose and criticise social problems such as racism, sexism, classism, and dishonesty by individuals or entire groups, with the objective of bettering humanity by exposing its flaws and absurdities. They make use of sarcasm, comedy, exaggeration, and mocking.

This book looks at the pervasive social and political satire in three novels in three different languages, namely Odia, Hindi and Malyalam, encompassing a period of about eight decades: Six Acres and a Third by Fakir Mohan Senapati (first serialised in 1897-1899), Raag Darbari by Shrilal Shukla (1968), and The Saga of Dharmapuri by O.V. Vijayan (first serialised in 1977). Each work is considered a classic in its original language. Their English translations have won them admirers all over the globe.
